A U.S. lawmaker has secured House approval for an amendment proposing the suspension of all American aid to Nigeria over attacks on Christians.

Congressman Greg Steube, who represents Florida’s Suncoast, announced the development in a statement, saying the amendment would withhold 100 per cent of U.S. assistance to Nigeria until the country’s government halts what he described as the slaughter of Christians.

Announcing the outcome, Steube said: “My amendment to withhold 100% of U.S. aid to Nigeria until its government stops the slaughter of Christians has PASSED.”

He maintained that U.S. taxpayers should not finance governments that fail to protect Christian communities from violence.

“American taxpayers should NEVER bankroll governments that turn a blind eye while Christians are abducted, tortured, and murdered,” the lawmaker stated.

Steube ended his statement with a call for an end to what he described as unnecessary foreign assistance, declaring: “No more wasteful foreign aid!”
