President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos after they defeated Japan 2–1 to become the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
In a statement celebrating the historic achievement, Tinubu said he watched First Lady Oluremi Tinubu follow the final against Japan shortly after their return from official engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
The President described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent, praising the young players for their courage, discipline and determination throughout the competition in Morocco.
“Our young girls have conquered the world, made history and brought immense honour to Nigeria and the African continent,” he said.
Tinubu recalled the team’s promise to win the trophy after securing a place in the final, noting that the players had fulfilled their pledge through their performance against Japan.
He said the achievement extended beyond football, describing it as a source of inspiration for millions of Nigerian girls aspiring to excel in different fields.
“Millions of young Nigerian girls will look at what you have achieved and know that they, too, can dream big, compete with the best and reach the pinnacle of their chosen fields,” the President said.
Tinubu also congratulated the coaching crew, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), National Sports Commission and others who contributed to the team’s success.
On behalf of the Federal Government and Nigerians, he saluted the players for writing what he described as a glorious new chapter in the country’s sporting history.
“Nigeria celebrates you. I celebrate you,” he added.
