The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has criticised the presence of a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft that made an emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, on December 8, 2025.

In a statement issued by the AES and signed by General Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition in Mali and head of the Sahel Confederation, the bloc disclosed that the aircraft “was forced to land… following an in-flight emergency,” while operating in Burkinabe airspace. The aircraft carried two crew members and nine military passengers.

The regional body said Burkinabe security authorities opened an investigation soon after and “put in evidence the absence of authorisation for overflight of the Burkinabe territory for this military aircraft.”

AES leaders described the incident as a breach of the collective airspace and warned that actions of this nature erode the sovereignty of its member states. The communiqué condemned what it called “this violation of its airspace and the sovereignty of its member states.”

The confederation said the act was “carried out in disregard of international law and international civil and/or military aviation rules,” prompting new security measures for the joint airspace.

AES announced that its air and anti-air defence units have been placed on maximum alert, referencing the decision of the College of Heads of State dated December 22, 2024. The statement said the defences “have been authorized to neutralize any aircraft that would violate the confederal airspace.”

The communiqué was released in Bamako on December 8, 2025, with Goïta signing in his capacity as President of the Confederation of Sahel States.
