Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the city will host the prestigious E1 Racing Championship on October 4th and 5th, 2025, marking a historic first for any African city.
The Governor made this known following a visit to Monaco, where he attended the international electric boat racing event over the weekend.
Sanwo-Olu described the experience as a powerful demonstration of what bold ideas and determined execution can produce, adding that Lagos’ inclusion on the global racing calendar signals a new moment for the state’s engagement with clean energy and sustainable marine mobility.
“That’s a major milestone for the sport and for what it says about our city. It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he stated.
The Governor said the event presents an opportunity to showcase Lagos’ distinct identity, from its rich culture and spirited people to its growing prominence on the international stage.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special, our culture, our energy, and our people. It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city,” Sanwo-Olu added.
He acknowledged the support of Afreximbank, which is backing Team Drogba in the competition and has also played a key role in bringing the event to Nigeria.
“I’m grateful to Afreximbank for their support, not just as a partner but as a believer in what Lagos can achieve. Their investment in Team Drogba and their commitment to this vision mean a great deal,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.
The E1 Championship, known as the world’s first electric powerboat series, brings together sport, sustainability, and technology on an international platform. With Lagos set to be Africa’s pioneer host, expectations are high for a landmark event that could reshape global perceptions of Nigeria’s commercial capital.
