The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, granting the Federal Government one month to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and resolve other outstanding issues.
This development was contained in a press statement issued by the ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, after the union’s emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Festus Iyayi National Secretariat Complex, University of Abuja, on Wednesday, 22nd October 2025.
“NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the overwhelming support of Nigerians,” the statement read. The council also decided that “a one-month window should be given to the government to conclude the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and fully address other outstanding issues.”
The union urged the government to take advantage of the suspension period to resolve all pending matters to “guarantee industrial harmony and ensure stability of our academic calendar.”
According to the resolution, the suspension of the strike took effect from midnight, Wednesday, October 22, 2025. ASUU stated that if the government fails to meet its demands within one month, it “reserves the right to resume the strike action without further notice.”
The NEC also appealed to “patriotic Nigerians and stakeholders in education to prevail on government to speedily conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other outstanding issues.”
ASUU expressed appreciation to students, parents, the media, and the Nigeria Labour Congress for their understanding and solidarity during the industrial action.
