Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party with immediate effect.
The development was contained in a letter personally signed by Kwankwaso, in which he formally announced his exit from the NNPP.
In the statement, he said, “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.”
He noted that his time in the party remained a privilege, stating, “I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the party’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.”
Kwankwaso admitted that leaving the party was difficult, saying, “As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.” He linked his decision to shifts within the country’s political space, adding, “However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
He also paid tribute to the leadership of the party, stating, “I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time.” He further acknowledged other organs of the party and supporters, including the Kwankwasiyya movement, for their loyalty and dedication.
Despite his exit, Kwankwaso expressed hope for continued cooperation among political actors, saying, “We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”
His resignation is expected to stir fresh political alignments ahead of the next election cycle, as attention turns to his next move.
