The Nigerian Government through the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have announced the introduction of a Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons across Nigeria.

The notice, issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, stated: “The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) hereby notifies the public of the implementation of the Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID), in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.”

According to the agencies, the initiative is aimed at improving tax administration, strengthening transparency, and enhancing service delivery within the country’s revenue framework.

The Tax ID is designed to serve as a unified identifier for taxpayers, supporting interactions with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels. It is also expected to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and support better management of tax-related data.

The statement outlined key benefits of the system, including: “Single Tax Identity: One Tax ID for all tax transactions and engagements.”

It also listed other advantages such as easier registration, filing and payment processes, improved tracking of taxpayer records, reduced revenue leakages, and better alignment of data across all levels of government.

The notice added: “Simplified Compliance: Easier processes for registration, filing, and payment of taxes,” and further stated: “Improved Transparency: Better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records,” as well as “Enhanced Revenue Assurance: Reduction in tax leakages and improved accountability.”

The agencies directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organisations currently using the TIN Validation API to take note that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing platform.

They advised organisations seeking integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB via approved channels.
