The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the importation, sale and consumption of two banned alcoholic energy drinks confiscated by authorities in Ghana.
The agency, in Public Alert No. 032/2026, disclosed that it received a notification from the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority that about 140 boxes of the prohibited beverages were intercepted during regulatory enforcement operations in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
The products, identified as Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix, were seized over concerns surrounding their safety and regulatory status. The beverages had earlier been banned from sale and distribution because of the health dangers linked to combining alcohol with stimulants commonly found in energy drinks.
NAFDAC warned that alcoholic energy drinks can expose consumers to serious health dangers because “the stimulant ingredients can mask the effects of alcohol intoxication, potentially leading consumers to underestimate their level of impairment.”
The agency stated that young adults and adolescents face greater exposure to excessive alcohol intake, risk-taking behaviour, poor judgment and coordination, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, dehydration, sleep disturbances, as well as a higher likelihood of alcohol-related injuries and accidents.
NAFDAC directed importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to ensure the affected products are neither imported into Nigeria nor distributed, marketed or sold within the country. It also urged stakeholders to confirm that beverages offered for sale meet NAFDAC registration and regulatory requirements.
The agency called on members of the public to report any suspected presence of the products within Nigeria’s supply chain to the nearest NAFDAC office. Consumers were also encouraged to report any sightings of the drinks or adverse events linked to their consumption through the nearest NAFDAC office or the agency’s e-reporting platforms available on its website.
