The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the Eid al-Adha celebration.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Interior through the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, quoting the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The government said the declaration reflects its respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims who join the global Islamic community in observing this sacred occasion.
The minister extended the Federal Government’s greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the Diaspora, describing Eid al-Adha as “a festival of deep spiritual significance, grounded in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for one’s fellow man.”
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and reflection for the nation.
“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.
The government further wished Muslims a peaceful and joyful celebration, saying the season should promote brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity.
